AUGUSTA - Maine Republican Party Chairman Charlie Webster alleged that voter fraud is widespread in Maine and urged the Secretary of State and Attorney General's Office to move forward with a formal investigation during a State House press conference today.
Based on public information he gathered from Maine's public universities and municipal clerks in Maine and other states, Webster produced a list of 206 names of people that he claimed voted in Maine but also claimed out-of-state residence. Some, though he declined to specify how many, voted twice in the 2010 election - once in Maine and once in their home state.
Webster was motivated to research potential election fraud after an effort to repeal the recent law to eliminate Election Day voter registration in Maine was launched a few weeks ago.
Supporters of the repeal effort dismissed Webster's findings as inconclusive and misleading.
