LEWISTON — Families displaced by three major fires that destroyed multiple apartment buildings in the city over the last 10 days continued the process of rebuilding their lives Wednesday.
Local and state housing officials organized an event to bring the families together with local landlords. More than 30 families signed up for the housing fair.
Officials with the Maine Housing Authority said they have applied for a waiver of federal housing rules that many of the tenants need in order to move quickly into permanent housing.
The officials expect to receive the waiver but it may take a few days before they get official word.
The federal aid would begin in June but many of the 15 or so landlords who took part in the housing fair said they would try to work with families to get them into apartments sooner.
In the meantime, city crews have begun clearing much of the rubble at the sites of the three fires.
Some buildings that are heavily damaged but still standing will be demolished and city officials said they expect that to begin in a few days.
