AUGUSTA — Maine Gov. Paul LePage is urging residents to stay safe and check on their neighbors as many remain without power.
The Republican governor declared a state of emergency before the weekend ice storm hit to ensure all state resources could be utilized.
LePage is discouraging residents from traveling as ice on roadways and downed power lines continue to cause difficulties.
More than 60,000 Mainers were without power on Wednesday and some central Maine towns were almost completely blacked out. Utility companies said some residents could be without power until Friday.
LePage also said Mainers can help their neighbors recover from the storm by volunteering their time or donating money to the Maine Disaster Relief Fund. Information is available at www.volunteermaine.org/disaster.
