Labor Day weekend deadly on Maine roads

Six people died in crashes over the holiday weekend, making this the deadliest Labor Day weekend since 1986.

Six people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in Maine over the weekend, making it the deadliest Labor Day weekend in 26 years.

Two were killed in motorcycle accidents. One man died n Dennistown after his bike struck a moose, the first fatality involving a moose in two years, according to Maine State Police. A second man died in an accident in Eagle Lake, just one day after he had received his motorcycle permit.

Motor vehicle crashes also were reported in New Portland late Friday night and in Biddeford, South Berwick and Van Buren, all on Sunday. Speed and alcohol were the likely causes of the accidents in Biddeford and New Portland, police said.

The six fatalties were the most on a Labor Day weekend since 1986, when 10 people were killed in crashes. Last year, five fatal accidents were reported.
