AUGUSTA – Kennebec County Republicans plan to caucus Saturday at Cony High School in what organizers are billing as a county-wide convention.

Maine first lady Ann LePage, and Rick Bennett, chairman of the state party organization, are scheduled to speak at the event.

The event starts at 8 a.m. for refreshments.

A slate of speakers, featuring the first lady, takes the auditorium stage at 9 a.m..

After the speakers, individual biennial town caucuses will take place for each town committee in separate rooms at the high school.

Republicans caucus every two years to elect delegates and alternates to the Maine Republican State Convention, nominate members to the Kennebec County Republican Committee and organize for the upcoming elections.

Town officials will be at the event register voters starting at 10:30 a.m., according to a news release from the county committee.

“This is an important and exciting first step in the 2014 election season for Kennebec County Republicans,” Kennebec County Republican Committee Chairman Curtis Ayotte said in the release. “In addition to completing party business that is required by state law, Kennebec County Republicans will have the opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet some new ones while participating in a program that features some wonderful speakers. I urge all Republicans in Kennebec County to attend this year’s county convention.”

Mark J. Ellis, spokesman for Kennebec County Republicans, said Tuesday the party has, for some time, favored county-wide conventions over individual town caucuses as a way to consolidate resources and because it is more convenient for candidates and other speakers to attend.

All 29 towns in the county, except Monmouth, are expected to caucus Saturday.

Monmouth’s town committee will caucu at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Monmouth Town Office.

Ellis said the town chairman of Monmouth Republicans can’t travel to Augusta for the event. Ellis said Monmouth Republicans are still welcome to attend the county convention.

Maine Democrats are scheduled to caucus Sunday, March 2, according to the Maine Democratic Party’s website.
