Winthrop woman hurt in Wayne accident

WAYNE — A Winthrop woman was hurt Wednesday when she apparently fell asleep while driving on Route 133 and crashed her car into a stone wall.

Susan Corbin, 62, was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with what was believed to be a non life-threatening arm injury as well as cuts and bruises, said Sgt. Scott Taylor of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

Corbin was wearing a seatbelt and both airbags deployed.

The crash occurred around noon as Corbin drove a 1998 Ford Countour on Route 133 near the Wayne General Store. Taylor said it appears Corbin fell asleep. Her car went off the left side of the road, smashed into a couple of guardrails and rammed into a stone wall before coming to a stop.

The crash ripped out utility pole guide wires and knocked out an electrical switch that caused a power outage in the area, but the utility pole and lines were not damaged, Taylor said.

Traffic was reduced to one lane as emergency workers tended to Corbin and removed the car.

Neither speed nor substances was a factor in the crash, Taylor said. There are no charges.

“She wasn’t going that fast,” he said.
