Vassalboro man injured in Riverside Drive accident
AUGUSTA — A Vassalboro man was injured Friday when he crashed his van into a pickup truck parked outside a Riverside Drive store.
Olin Charette, 56, was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, said Augusta Police Lt. Kevin Lully.
The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. as Charette was driving his 2000 Chevrolet Astrovan north on Riverside Drive. The van started to swerve, Lully said, before hitting a mailbox at 683 Riverside Drive. The van struck three other boxes, before drifting into the parking lot at C&S Market where it hit a parked 2006 Dodge Ram. The ram, which was empty, was driven to the store by Alice Jones of Unity, Lully said.
Maine Game Warden Steve Allaire, who had been following Charette’s van on Riverside Drive, was the first emergency responder on the scene and called for an ambulance. Charette told Allaire that he had been feeling ill recently, Lully said.
The van sustained front end damage and the pickup truck was damaged on the driver’s side.
Neither speed nor substances was a factor in the crash and there are no charges, police said.
