Horse back in stall after hour at large

AUGUSTA — A horse was back behind stable bars Monday after breaking free and eluding city police and its owner for more than an hour.

The horse broke free from its corral on Hidden Haven Lane around 3 p.m. Sunday and bolted across Route 3 to a dead-end road and field across from the North Belfast Avenue intersection.

Deputy Chief Jared Mills of the Augusta police said the animal, described in a report only as a horse, eluded its owner, Augusta police Sgt. Danny Boivin and Officers Peter Cloutier and Matthew Estes for nearly an hour before it finally was captured shortly after 4 p.m. and led back home.

Mills said the horse was not injured and did not disrupt traffic on nearby Route 3 and North Belfast Avenue.
