PITTSFIELD — A hearse overturned on Interstate 95 in Pittsfield Thursday afternoon after the driver fell asleep at the wheel, according to a news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Michael Kelley, 55, of Salsbury Cove, who was driving the hearse, fell asleep while driving north at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon. The hearse, owned by Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home in Ellsworth, was carrying a body and casket, which were transferred to another hearse, according to the release.
Traffic heading north was reduced to one lane as rescue personnel tended to Kelley before he was taken to Sebasticook hospital in Pittsfield with injuries that police described as serious but not life threatening.
The hearse overturned three or four times before coming to an upright rest in the road, according to the release.
