BANGOR — The two sides in the gay-marriage campaign are set to debate on live television tonight with less than three weeks to go until Election Day.
Carroll Conley of the Christian Civic League of Maine and Matt McTighe of Mainers United for Marriage are set to spar in one of the few debates scheduled on the topic.
The men are scheduled to debate on the news set at WABI TV-5 in Bangor. The debate will be aired live from 7-8 p.m.
On Nov. 6, Mainers will decide Question 1, which asks if they want to allow the state to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Maine is one of four states voting on the issue this fall.
Supporters of the initiative say gay and lesbian couples deserve the same right to get married as heterosexual couples. Opponents say marriage has been defined as the union of one man and one woman for thousands of years and should not be changed.
Six states and the District of Columbia currently allow same-sex couples to marry.
