Gardiner Legion loses opener to Bangor

SOUTH PORTLAND -- Clutch pitching by Bangor's Joe Stanewicz and Nate Lewis lifted Bangor to an 11-4 victory over Gardiner on Wednesday afternoon on the first day of the American Legion Baseball state tournament.

Gardiner now faces Bessey Motors in an elimination game at 10 a.m., Thursday.

Bangor took advantage of four Gardiner errors to go ahead 5-0 after three innings. Gardiner got within 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth, and still trailed only 7-4 entering the bottom of the seventh. Gardiner loaded the bases with no outs, but Lewis relieved Stanewicz and got out of the inning without a run scoring.

Gardiner pitchers also walked eight and hit four batters.

Spencer Allen hit a two-run homer and Donnie Cray had three hits for Gardiner (15-7).
