Full-time fire department post on proposed Belgrade warrant

Town warrant finalization at Tuesday’s selectmen’s meeting will include a proposal for a the department’s first full-time staffer.

Staff Report

BELGRADE — The addition of a full-time person to the town’s fire and resque squad will be part of the discussion when the Board of Selectpersons meet Tuesday to finalize articles for the annual Town Meeting warrant.

The business portion of the annual town meeting is set for Saturday, March 15, with elections and votes on referendum questions set for March 14.

Tuesday’s regular select board meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Center for All Seasons rather than the Town Office to make room for the budget committee, which has been invited to the meeting.

Town Manager Gregory Gill said most of the articles to be considered were awaiting final audit figures from 2013.

Daniel McKenzie, chief and chief of rescue, said the proposal for the department’s first full-time employee and is aimed at addressing “the lack of manpower during the day during the week and to help meet state requirements.”

The department averages about 350 calls for fire and rescue a year, McKenzie said Monday. He said he wasn’t sure whether the proposal would make its way through to the Town Warrant.

Other proposed town warrant items include changes to the tree and transfer station/solid waste ordinances.

Selectmen Tuesday will also hear a request for funding from the McGrath Pond Salmon Lake Association and consider an order for an additional 1,000 yards of sand and 200 tons of salt.

Ernest Rice, board vice chairman, said Monday the town’s supplies are running low.
