“We don’t do anything first thing in the morning,” said Della’s father Davin. “We’re great sleepers.”
Della Joy Kangas born at 12:10 p.m. to Davin and Holly Kangas at 6 pounds, 11 ounces. Her birth at Franklin Health Women’s Care in Farmington was the first in central Maine, with Dr. Jacques Belair attending the birth.
As of early Wednesday afternoon, Waterville’s Inland Hospital, Augusta’s MaineGeneral Medical Center and Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan hadn’t reported any births.
Davin Kangas, 32, and Holly Kangas, 29, live in Strong. They said their ample family members in the area were excited to hear about their family’s newest addition.
“My mom was really excited,” Holly said.
Della’s grandparents are Philip and Jamie Charles, of New Vineyard, and Peter and Karen Kangas, of New Sharon.
Della’s siblings, 5-year-old brother Avery and 2-year-old sister Irelynn, played in the hospital room while their parents talked. Holly Kangas said they are excited to have a sibling.
“Irelynn wanted to hold her, but then (Della) started to cry and she was ready to give her back,” Holly said.
Davin said he is thankful he was there for the birth of all three children, and that their children were also in the room for the birth Wednesday.
“They weren’t so sure about the whole experience, but then neither was I,” he said.
The couple wondered if they would have a Christmas baby, Davin said, but didn’t expect to have the first baby of the year.
The two joked that if they couldn’t get the tax exemption for having a baby before Jan. 1, then at least they won a mountain of gifts from area businesses for having the first baby.
“We’ll take New Year’s as a consolation prize,” Holly said.Kaitlin Schroeder — email@example.com
