SKOWHEGAN — A Farmington Falls man who took police in Skowhegan and Fairfield on a high speed chase Feb. 7 has been indicted on five criminal charges by a Somerset County grand jury.

Ernest N. Nault, 43, is charged by the grand jury with eluding police and with passing a clearly identifiable police roadblock, both Class C felonies, punishable by up to five years in prison on each charge. He also is charged with criminal speed, operating after suspension and driving to endanger, all misdemeanors.

Nault was being pursued by Skowhegan police when he drove his Buick into Fairfield on U.S. Route 201, where police clocked him traveling at 103 mph, according to Fairfield Police Chief Tom Gould.

Police laid down a set of road spikes near the intersection of Route 201 and Ohio Hill Road, where Nault drove over the road spikes with such speed that the cord used to drag the spikes off the road broke. With all four of the Buick’s tires deflated, Nault pulled over and surrendered to police. No one was hurt.

A grand jury indictment is not a finding of guilt, but indicates there is enough evidence to bring a case to trial.
