FAIRFIELD — The outcome of a goal-setting discussion at tonight’s Town Council meeting is likely to have a large impact on what the town government will tackle for the rest of 2013.

The council also expects to hear a presentation from a company that hopes to provide natural gas to the region.

After the presentation, the council plans to establish goals for 2013, using the 2012 council goals voted on last January as a starting point, according to Town Manager Josh Reny.

The goals will be new to three of the five council members, who began their terms this year, including Chairwoman Tracey Stevens.

“They may change them or look at them and say, ‘Yup, those are our goals,'” Reny said.

The 2012 goals included 23 items organized under six headings: tax relief; governance and accountability; communication and public relations; equipment, facilities and maintenance; planning and development and intergovernmental collaboration.

Specific goals included improving energy efficiency in town buildings, meeting with the school board to discuss tax relief strategies and broadcasting public meetings on public-access television.

Tonight’s meeting will begin with the presentation from Summit Natural Gas, which is competing with Maine Natural Gas to supply gas to many central Maine communities. On Jan. 10, the state authorized Summit to build pipelines providing service to Albion, Augusta, Belgrade, China, Fairfield, Farmingdale, Gardiner, Hallowell, Madison, Norridgewock, Oakland, Richmond, Sidney, Skowhegan, Waterville, Windsor and Winslow.

Other items on the council agenda include new appointments to the CATV board of directors and the Economic and Community Development Advisory Committee.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the Community Center.
