EMBDEN — A Barron Road woman was arrested Thursday morning and her three-year-old son was taken by state human services workers following a custody dispute in California.

The woman, Pamela Renae Parks, 31, of Embden, was taken into custody by Somerset County sheriff’s deputies around 9 a.m. Thursday.

The arrest warrants issued June 10 are for contempt of court and for taking the child out of the state of California in violation of a court order.

The case began as a custody dispute between Parks and the child’s biological father, according to Detective Lt. Carl E. Gottardi of the sheriff’s department. A superior court judge granted the father sole custody of the child, Gottardi said.

Parks is being held without bail at the county jail in East Madison as a fugitive from justice on two felony arrest warrants from Inyo County, Calif., Superior Court, Gottardi said.

A protective custody warrant for the child also was issued by the California court. A representative from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services took custody of the child.

“Within a few days the state of California will be sending representatives up from the district attorney’s office in Inyo County to pick up the child and bring the child back to California,” Gottardi said.

Parks will be arraigned in a Skowhegan court on the fugitive charge and the process of extradition will begin in California, he said.
