Eight Teacher of the Year nominees named

From staff reports

AUGUSTA— Eight Teacher of the Year nominees will be honored today at the State House.

The nominees will be in the Hall of Flags, where they will display class projects and achievements.

The selection process by the Maine Education Department results in a Teacher of the Year winner being named in early September, typically during a surprise assembly at his or her school. The winner often visits other schools and is a spokesperson for teachers and education in the state.

This year's nominees are:

Matthew Amoroso, Thornton Academy, Saco

Katherine Bousquet, Central School, South Berwick

Richard Lent, Leavitt Area High School, Turner

Elizabeth Marass, Sanford High School

Tracy Scully, Acton Elementary School

Shannon Shanning, Whittier Middle School, Poland

Beth Skotarczak, Oxford-Cumberland Canal School, Westbrook

Beth Switzer, Coastal Ridge Elementary School, York
