WILTON — A Main Street woman escaped a fire that destroyed her mobile home early Friday morning thanks to her dog, who woke her up and probably didn't survive the fire.

Wilton Fire Chief Sonny Dunham said Kelly Hall, who was renting the mobile home in Arkay Trailer Park, reported the fire at 2:55 a.m. from her neighbor's home after she fled her residence at 939 Main St.

Dunham said three-quarters of the home was in flames when more than 50 firefighters and an ambulance crew arrived about 3 a.m.

Dunham said Hall's dog missing. "We couldn't find it, but there's no way it could have got out," he said.

Hall was standing on the road when firefighters arrived, he said.

She was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital by North Star Ambulance for stress and was released after several hours, Dunham said.

He said Deputy Chief Tom Doak also was taken by ambulance to the hospital after showing what Dunham thought were signs of a heart attack. Doak was evaluated and released after a few hours, Dunham said.

Dunham said the fire was under control by 3:30 a.m. and the responders had left the scene by 8 a.m.

The mobile home, owned by Errol Farmer, was not insured, Dunham said.

Dunham said firefighters also evacuated two neighboring homes as a precaution.

"There was so much heat that I thought one of them was going to ignite," he said.

Dunham said units from Farmington, Jay, Livermore Falls, Wilton and East Dixfield responded.
