AUGUSTA — Police are seeking one suspect, and possibly a second, in an assault at Walmart which sent a man to the hospital.

No arrests had been made as of Tuesday night, though police said they do have a primary suspect they are seeking in the incident, and a companion of his may have been involved, as well.

The incident was initially reported as an attempted strong-arm robbery at 3:39 p.m. Tuesday.

Further investigation indicated an assault, not a robbery, had occurred, between two men who had apparently also been involved in an earlier altercation with each other, according to Lt. Christopher Massey.

“The victim knew one of the suspects, there had been a previous incident between the two,” Massey said. “They happened to meet up again at the entrance of Walmart. It was a fight, between the victim and one of the suspects. And another suspect may have gotten involved a little bit.”

Massey said the victim was treated for minor injuries at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

A vehicle a witness reported leaving the scene was pulled over by Maine State Police, but police determined neither the vehicle nor its occupants were involved in the incident, Massey said.
