THORNDIKE — Two people were still listed in critical condition Saturday after a car crash Thursday claimed the life of a third person.

Alvaro Soares, 27, of Unity, and his sister, Kelly Soares, 22, of Cranston, R.I., were listed in critical condition, according to a spokeswoman for Eastern Maine Medical Center.

A vehicle that Alvaro Soares was driving crashed into a utility pole on Unity Road around 7:15 p.m. Thursday, killing passenger Oscar Tizon Brito, 23, a Peruvian national residing in Providence, R.I., according to Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Trafton said he believed alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.

The EMMC spokeswoman wouldn’t elaborate on the two victims’ conditions, but according to the American Hospital Association, “critical condition” means vital signs are unstable, not within normal limits, the patient may be unconscious and indicators for recovery are unfavorable.

According to Trafton, a transformer atop the utility pole had exploded when he got to the scene. Kelly Soares had been ejected from the vehicle and sparks were falling near her, he said.

Trafton said the trio was leaving a family gathering nearby. Unity Road in Thorndike Village was closed and traffic diverted for about four hours Thursday.
