WATERVILLE — The body of an unidentified man was discovered Friday off Kennedy Memorial Drive. His death in under investigation, according to police.
At 12:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a dead body at 295 Kennedy Memorial Drive, according to a press release from Chief Joseph Massey. Police and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit worked together to recover the body, which was taken to the chief medical examiner's office in Augusta.
"At this time, the male subject has not been identified, and no cause of death will be released until the medical examiner's office has conducted its investigation," Massey said in the release.
Gerald Mackenzie, owner of a general contractor company in Waterville, was working near the site Friday and said one of his employees discovered the body "out back."
The site, just west of Shaw's supermarket, has a mix of industrial and office buildings.
Mackenzie didn't want to discuss the discovery in detail but said the body had apparently been there a while.
He added that the body was covered in snow, indicating it had been there at least before the most recent snowfall. Some of the snow had melted from the body, which allowed the employee to spot it, Mackenzie said.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said state police sent two detectives to the scene Friday to assist in the investigation, but any updates would be announced by Waterville police, the lead agency in the case. Massey said he doesn't anticipate any new information will be released before Monday.
