Blueberry grower cited for waste violations

DEBLOIS  — One of the world's largest blueberry growers has been accused of discharging so much blueberry waste into a Maine river that the water turned blue.

Matt Young of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection alleges Wyman and Son of Milbridge allowed unprocessed waste berries, leaves, twigs and other waste to leach into the Great Falls Branch of Schoodic Brook in Deblois.

The discharge was discovered in August.

Young tells the Bangor Daily News the blueberry processing waste leached into a pond, traveled through a man-made ditch into a wooded area where it flowed into the river at the rate of 10 gallons per minute.

Wyman has been ordered to stop.

The incident remains under investigation and no penalty has been determined.

A Wyman official had no comment.
