BINGHAM — A bank in town was robbed by a man armed with a hammer, less than three weeks after someone with the same weapon robbed the town’s other bank the same way.

Police are not sure whether the robberies were by the same man.

Tuesday’s robbery at Skowhegan Savings Bank on Main Street was reported shortly after 1 p.m.. The robbery was by a white man between 5 feet, 10 inches and 6 feet tall wearing dark clothes and a ski mask and carrying a hammer, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

The robber made off with an undisclosed amount of cash after threatening employees inside the bank, Lancaster said. He would not say what the threat was.

Camden National Bank, also on Main Street, was robbed on Jan. 17, also by a man with a hammer. Each robber also wore a black ski mask and fled on foot.

Tuesday’s robber was described as slender, while the robber in the previous robbery was described as heavyset.

Lancaster said the department is working to identify other similarities between the two robberies and are not sure yet whether the two are related.

No customers were in the bank Tuesday and no one was injured, Lancaster said.

The robber fled the bank on foot and left tracks in the snow on nearby Lander Avenue, where police were looking for evidence with tracking dogs Tuesday afternoon. Lancaster said it was not clear whether he got away in a vehicle.

Police so far have no suspects in the first robbery, but Lancaster said Tuesday the department has active leads it’s following. A composite image of the robber based on surveillance images and witness reports was released last week.

The Maine State Police and Maine Warden Service also were on the scene, as were several deputies, two detectives and the chief deputy from the sheriff’s department.

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone with information about either robbery call the detective division at 474-9591 or the tip line at 474-0230. Anyone with information also can email the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department at sherifftips@somersetcounty-me.org.
