Augusta schools dismissed early

AUGUSTA -- The city dismissed elementary and middle school students early today, the result of a heat index reaching dangerously high levels.

Students in kindergarten through grade eight left school at 12 p.m. Cony High School students remained at school, a school department spokesman said.

Temperatures in Augusta were at 93 degrees at 11 a.m., according to the National Weather Service, with a heat index around 100.

Today is the first day of school for Augusta students in grades 10 through 12. Wednesday marked the opening of school for grades 1 through 9.
