SKOWHEGAN — U.S. Sen. Angus King held a video conference Wednesday with more than 200 students from Somerset Career & Technical Center in Skowhegan as part of his ongoing “Capitol Class with Angus” series.

During the Skype conference, students asked King questions about this week’s State of the Union address, how he balances his time between Maine and Washington, the future of Maine’s outdoor industry, and what can be done to reduce poverty in rural areas, according to a press release.

“The students were very impressive and I was delighted for an opportunity to speak with them,” King said in a release. “They were energetic, asked thoughtful questions, and demonstrated a sincere interest in learning. Our conversation reinforced the importance of vocational schools, like Somerset Career & Technical, in equipping our students with the necessary skills for success in today’s job market.”

David Dorr, director of Somerset Career & Technical Center, said the students enjoyed asking him questions and appreciated listening to his personal stories.

“One of the things we try to do is teach our students about the importance of having the right attitude,” Dorr said. “Sen. King’s message reflected that when he said every job we do is important and always deserves our best work. I think it was something the students really took to heart.”
