Augusta man charged after fleeing traffic stop

AUGUSTA — A city man is facing charges after reportedly fleeing a traffic stop Friday.

Michael Bumford, 36, was arrested on charges of eluding, refusing to submit to arrest or detention, unlawful possession of a scheduled drug, use of drug paraphernalia and violating conditions of release. Deputy Chief Jared Mills of the Augusta Police said Bumford also was issued two warrants.

Bumford was held without bail over the weekend at the Kennebec County jail.

Augusta Police Officer Carly Smith stopped Bumford for a driving infraction around 10:30 a.m. Friday near the playground on Northern Avenue. Bumford sped away when Smith got out of the cruiser and began to walk to his car, Mills said. Smith got back into her cruiser and chased Bumford’s car north on Northern Avenue. The brief pursuit continued right on Oxford Street and left onto River Street, Mills said. Bumford got out of his car and fled on foot, Mills said. Smith chased him behind some residences where she took Bumford into custody. There was no assault and no injuries, Mills said.

Bumford was free on bail after being indicted in February in Kennebec County Superior Court on charges of unlawful possession of heroin and falsifying physical evidence Aug. 23, 2013, in Augusta.
