One person hospitalized after Winthrop crash

WINTHROP — One person was taken to the hospital after a head-on crash Saturday on U.S. Route 202.

Ali S. Kamel, 47, of Lewiston, was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta after complaining of neck pain, said Winthrop Police Capt. Ryan Frost.

The second driver, 74-year-old Leslie Cimpher of Farmingdale, was not injured.

The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. Saturday just west of the Manchester town line. Cimpher was driving his 1998 Toyota four door west on U.S. 202 when the car drifted off the right side of the road. Frost said Cimpher over-corrected and veered back across his lane and into the east-bound lane where his car hit head-on with Kamel’s 2010 Nissan sport utility vehicle.

Both men were wearing seatbelts, Frost said.

Behr wasn’t sure how many tires in total were slashed. The slashings all are believed to have occurred between Friday night and Sunday morning. Police received a complaint Sunday on Mount Vernon Avenue and then three more on Monday morning, including Traction Motor Supplies on Darin Drive, KDT Towing on Leighton Road and Maine Security Surveillance on Anthony Avenue.

Police continue to investigate the slashings.

Behr asked anyone who noticed suspicious activity or with information to call Augusta police dispatchers at 626-2370 ext. 1.

Shea was driving east, toward Hallowell, when the crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m. near the Balsam Drive intersection where the speed limit is 45 miles-per-hour. Her 2004 Saturn four door skidded out of control on ice and went off the right side of the road. Nason said the car hit the snowbank and rolled over before coming to rest on its wheels.

“It rolled over at least once, possibly twice,” Nason said.

The eastbound lane of Winthrop Street was shut down for about 45 minutes as medics tended to Shea and crews removed the vehicle.

The crash occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. near the Church Road intersection. Rogers lost control of her 1999 Audi on black ice, Reardon said. The car left the right side of the road, traveled a couple hundred feet down the snow bank and rolled over at least once before coming to rest perpendicular to the road.
