Break-in, beating lead to charges

AUGUSTA — A local man was arrested early Tuesday for allegedly beating up a woman, threatening another, breaking into an apartment and driving without a license.

Alan C. Turner, 44, was arrested on State Street and charged with burglary, aggravated criminal mischief, assault, criminal threatening and operating a vehicle without a license by police responding to a report of a domestic disturbance at 12:48 a.m. Tuesday on State Street.

Witnesses said Turner began “freaking out” at a State Street apartment. A woman there said he beat her up and threatened her until she told him three men had raped her, which she told him so he would leave her alone, according to an affidavit.

Turner then allegedly said he was going to kill the three men, took the keys to a minivan that belonged to another woman in the apartment and left.

About 10 minutes later, another woman called police from Northern Avenue and said a man had broken into a neighbor’s apartment and left after briefly entering the apartment.

At 1 a.m., another Northern Avenue woman called to report Turner. She said after she opened her apartment door for him, he pushed her, kicked her kitchen table and told her to “shut up before I hit you.” The woman said he was carrying a pink stun gun in one hand and in the other a bat, though Officer Jonathan Provisor said in his affidavit he later located a large grilling spatula next to the driver’s seat of the minivan, which he said probably was the object she had believed to be a bat.

Turner told police he was trying to find the men who allegedly had raped his longtime acquaintance.

Provisor wrote in the affidavit he saw a man he believed to be Turner drive into the driveway of the State Street apartment building where the first incident was reported. He said Turner’s license was suspended. He was arrested and taken to the Kennebec County jail.
