Augusta man arrested after police hunt
AUGUSTA — City police on Sunday arrested a man wanted on charges domestic violence assault and obstructing report of a crime.
Benjamin Robert Beland, 33, of Augusta had been the subject of a police search after his girlfriend told them Beland had hit her and stolen $120 in cash from her on Jan. 14.
Beland was arrested shortly before 11:06 a.m. Sunday at the Circle K on Civic Center Drive and taken to Kennebec County jail.
An affidavit by Augusta Police Officer Matthew Estes, filed in Kennebec County Superior Court, says the woman reported that Beland came to her home on Hope Way Jan. 14 knowing she was getting public assistance money that day. Estes’ affidavit says the woman refused to give him money, telling him she needed it for her children. According to the affidavit, Beland struck the woman in the face, leaving her with a bruised eye, and took $120 from the kitchen counter. She said that she threatened to call police if he didn’t give it back, and he took the phone from her and threw it.
Beland allegedly fled the scene in a pickup truck driven by another person.
Police checked several residences looking for Beland before asking the public to call if he was spotted.
While police initially said Beland was facing a robbery charge, that charge was not pursued in court on Tuesday when Beland made an initial court appearance via video in Kennebec County Superior Court. Justice Michaela Murphy set bail at $250 cash.
Published reports from September 2011 show Beland was sentenced to nine months in jail concurrent to a probation revocation and fined $2,500 after being convicted of operating after revocation.
He was also arrested in Augusta in November on a warrant after police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance on Leighton Road.
