Crews keep blaze
from reaching house
PITTSTON — A fire that destroyed a two-car garage attached to a house on Route 27 Saturday evening was started by a wood stove in the garage, according to the Pittston fire chief.
Fire departments from Chelsea, Dresden, Farmingdale, Gardiner, Pittston, Randolph, West Gardiner, Whitefield and Wiscasset responded to the fire, which was reported shortly before 3 p.m. at 1083 Wiscasset Road.
The fire heavily damaged the garage, but firefighters were able to stop it before it spread to the house, Pittston Fire Chief Jason Farris said.
He said he didn’t know who owned the house. No one was hurt, although someone was in the house at the time of the fire.
When the firefighters arrived, the back half of the large garage was on fire and flames were spreading through the garage attic into the breezeway attic, Farris said.
The fire appeared to be out by 5:30 p.m.
