No one was home and no one was hurt in the blaze, although a dog that lived in the home was still missing as of 7:15 p.m.

Firefighters from several area towns responded to the call, which went out around 5:50 p.m. The two-story house with gray siding and red shutters was heavily damaged in the fire, which is believed to have started in an addition to the house.

“With that kind of extension, it’s in the walls and the attic so we’re trying to dig it out,” said Farmingdale Assistant Fire Chief Mike LaPlante, whose department responded to the fire on the Gardiner-Farmingdale town line.

The cause is still under investigation.

The stubborn fire continued to flare even after 7 p.m. and part of the ceiling on the second floor had collapsed.

Crews from Farmingdale, Pittston, Randolph, Hallowell and West Gardiner were at the scene.

LaPlante said the home is owned by Jason Joseph.

Despite the severity of the fire, Joseph was able to retrieve some of his Christmas presents, LaPlante said.
