AUGUSTA — A city man is facing growing and trafficking drug charges after police said they seized more than 100 marijuana plants from his Chamberlain Street apartment.

Donald Reid, 50, of Augusta, was charged with aggravated marijuana cultivation, unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs and two separate charges of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, according to Kennebec County Sheriff Randall Liberty.

Reid was being held Monday at the Kennebec County jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail.

Sheriff’s deputies found the marijuana growing operation about noon Monday during a search of Reid’s apartment at 19 Chamberlain St., Liberty said. Deputies found 103 marijuana plants in various stages of growth, he said, and there were 30 4-foot-tall plants that were mature and budded.

“He had a very small apartment,” Liberty said. “More than half the living space was converted over to marijuana growing.”

Police also seized processed marijuana, suboxone strips and four pills of muscle relaxant cyclobenzaprine, for which Reid had no prescription, Liberty said.

He estimated the value of the seized drugs exceeds $10,000.

“It’s a medium-sized operation,” Liberty said.

Reid was convicted of marijuana trafficking in the 1980s in Florida, Liberty said.

Sheriff’s investigators secured a search warrant after developing information from various sources, Liberty said. “We found just what we expected to find,” he said.
