The folk-holler bandTHE GHOST OF PAUL REVEREto make Mainely Brews debut June 29

It's always fun discovering new acts, especially ones from our own state. Such is the case with the quintet of Griffin Sherry (guitar and vocals), Max Davis (banjo and vocals), Matt Young (harmonica and mandolin), Matt Baker (mandolin) and Sean McCarthy (bass and vocals) better known as The Ghost of Paul Revere. This Portland-based group will perform at Mainely Brews Saturday and, to that end, a phoner was arranged with McCarthy to learn a little more about the band.

Hats off to all the caring dads out there

Dear Readers: Happy Father's Day to all the men in our reading audience who have had the pleasures and responsibilities of raising children. This includes fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers and those who have stepped in as father figures for those who needed them. Bless you all. Having a caring father is not only one of life's great joys, but fathers also are tremendously important to a child's emotional, academic and moral development.

Protective parents can harm more than help

I work for a university in the admissions office. Can you please, please, PLEASE tell the moms to quit calling us with their kids sitting on the couch beside them. If the child is old enough to go to college, he or she is old enough to make the phone call. I know it is hard to let go, but please tell parents letting go is a sign that they have done a good job, and that their child is ready to go out on his or her own.
