Master logger Will Cole, left, explains forestry to Lincoln School second-graders Thursday at the city of Augusta’s new Bond Brook Forest. Two second-grade classes from Lincoln were treated to a lumberjack breakfast at the Senator Inn before touring the harvest conducted by Trees Ltd. The selective cutting built trails for hiking and Nordic skiing while cultivating trees for future harvests in a sustainable manner, according to Leif Dahlin, city director of community services. Children learned about the Bond Brook Forest ecosystems, history and silviculture from certified professional loggers. Foresters from several organizations, including Verso Paper, the Maine Forest Service, Central Maine Forestry and Jake Maier Forestry, showed the children how to plan and execute harvests. After the tour, each child received a doughnut courtesy of Cole’s mother, Nancy.
