SNAPSHOT: Down by the river

Clayton Smith, of Harpswell, carries a basket of fiddleheads he harvested in Hallowell down to the Kennebec River to wash. "The season has just started," Smith said of the ferns that grow in river valleys, but he has already picked about 600 pounds.
