The Cony-Gardiner Drive Out Cancer Challenge began with a field hockey game. It now includes many more sports, but the field hockey game is still a huge deal for everyone involved.
Cony's honorary captain at this year's field hockey game is John Cameron, an 87-year-old Cony graduate. Cameron is the grandfather of current Cony coach Holly Daigle.
"I'll be escorting hom onto the field with his wife, Linda," Daigle said. "It'll be a really special event, and emotional, I'm sure."
Daigle said Cameron was diagnosed with cancer but it is in remission.
The Cony-Gardiner field hockey game will be at Gardiner Area High School on Tuesday, Aug. 28. Game times are 5:30 p.m. for the junior varsity and 7 p.m. for the varsity.
