Tim Whitmore scored 32 points Tuesday night, but it was a pass, not a shot that lift his team to victory.
Late in the second overtime of the Monmouth boys basketball's Mountain Valley Conference game against Wiscasset, Whitmore caught a pass on an inbounds play and immediately double team, according to Monmouth coach Lucas Turner. Whitmore found a wide open Roger Bachelder for a layup to give the Mustangs a 53-52 lead. Wiscasset missed a last second shot, giving Monmouth a key victory.
"Our goal was to make it (to the playoffs)," Turner said. "This certainly helps."
Monmouth improved to 9-4 and is now third in the Western Maine Class C Heal point standings. Wiscasset falls to 10-3 and is fifth in Western C.
Monmouth avenged a 62-50 loss to Wiscasset on Dec. 20.
