Here’s how I see the high school football top 10 this week.
1. Cheverus
2. Thornton
3. Lawrence
4. Scarborough
5. Messalonskee
6. Portland
7. Mt. Blue
8. Leavitt
9. Cony
10. Brunswick
There are a few games with top 10 implications this week, and the biggest is Mt. Blue at Leavitt. Both teams are 5-0, and the winner will have first place in the Pine Tree Conference Class B division all to themselves. Last season, these teams played the best playoff game in the state, with Leavitt winning 22-21 in double overtime.
Another game featuring a pair of top 10 teams is Brunswick (4-1) at Messalonskee (5-0). Brunswick is the top rushing team in the PTC A, but few teams in the state stuff the run like Messalonskee. Both teams appear headed to the playoffs, but this game could determine home field in a postseason rematch.
If Cheverus gets by Bonny Eagle on Saturday, and Thornton Academy beats Windham, we’ll have the most anticipated matchup of the season next week, when No. 1 and No. 2 meet in Saco.
The complete Morning Sentinel/Kennebec Journal/Portland Press Herald poll will be available in Friday’s newspapers.
