Gov. William Nicholas of the Passamaquoddy Tribe and Lt. Gov. Joseph Socobasin said today they are switching parties so they can vote in the primary for Republican Steve Abbott on June 8.
The men will drop their Democratic Party affiliation to vote for Abbott, they said in a release.
"Having spent several hours a day in Augusta over the past three years, it's been clear to me the importance of having a Maine governor who has passion and understanding for the Passamaquoddy people -- and I believe Steve Abbott will, no doubt, serve us respectfully as Maine's next governor," Nicholas said in a statement.
He and Socobasin are inviting other tribal members to meet Abbott at 2 p.m. Friday at the Indian Township tribal offices.
And, in case you're wondering, the deadline to switch parties is May 21.
