Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, calls this year's crop of governor's races “the biggest Statehouse change election in the last half century.”

That's not necessarily because he expects different parties to take over in most states, but because it's possible that a majority of the governors who take over next January will be freshmen.

And of course in Maine, that will be true regardless of who wins, since we have an open seat. By Sabato's analysis, the race in Maine remains a toss-up. He just can't pick a favorite party, at least not this early in the game.
