BOSTON — Monmouth Academy graduate Kevin Desmond, a sophomore at the University of Southern Maine, broke the school record in the 800-meter run Friday night at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association New England Championships.

Desmond finished in a time of 1 minutes, 51.70 seconds to finish in sixth place. He bettered the previous record of 1:52.07 set last year by Ben Manning at the same meet. Desmond will be among eight finalists who will race for the regional title at 2 p.m. Saturday.
