PARK RIDGE, Ill. — Madison Area Memorial High School graduate Matthew McClintock, a cross country runner at Purdue University, was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, the conference office announced Tuesday.
McClintock is the first Purdue male to win the honor. McClintock earns the award just two days after placing eighth at the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Mich. McClintock was the top placing freshman and was the only rookie to finish in the top 15.
The Athens native was the top finisher for Purdue in every race this season. He was the top finisher overall twice including in his first career race, the Valparaiso Crusader Invitational.
