Here's some news on former central Maine standouts as we sit early in the college season:
• Former Mt. Blue and University of New England star Michelle Oswald was recently named an assistant coach at St. Joseph's College in Standish. Oswald set the school career assist records at both Mt. Blue and UNE. St. Joe's begins its season Sept. 1.
• Skowhegan grad Jessie Skillings scored the University of Maine's only goal in a 4-1 loss to Boston College on Saturday. Skillings, former teammate Nicole Sevey, and former Nokomis standout Marissa Shaw all started the game. All are freshmen who were finalists for the Miss Maine Field Hockey Award last fall. (Sevey won the award.)
• Last year's other Miss Maine finalist, Messalonskee's Katie Bernatchez, opened her college career Friday by seeing time off the bench for 14th-ranked Boston University. The Terriers defeated Delaware, 4-3, in overtime.
• Another outstanding high school player in central Maine last fall was Leah Edmondson of Nokomis. Edmondson now plays for 21st-ranked Northeastern, and played 26 minutes Friday as the Huskies defeated Louisville in their season opener.
