A few extra notes from Erskine’s 6-1 softball victory over Lawrence on Friday:
• One player who impressed me was Lawrence center fielder Megan Moen. She plays with confidence in the outfield, and has great range. In the second inning, with two on and nobody out, Moen went into right-center to run down a long drive by Meryl Bond. It was probably a double or triple with a lot of center fielders.
• Lawrence lost the opener 10-3 to Hampden and lost this game by giving up six runs in the first two innings. Coach Joey Marcoux pointed out his team has three great senior leaders, but still, those are the only three seniors. Marcoux said the players get along well and the goal now is to develop chemistry.
“We’re still a team that’s trying to find ourselves,” Marcoux said. “We’ve got athletic ability. We only made one error all game. We just couldn’t seem to muster anything the first two innings, and then after that, we beat them, 1-0.”
• Erskine pitcher Ashley Green did a nice job keeping the ball low, and she has a very good defense behind her. Green had to throw more pitches the second and third times through the lineup, but did what she needed to and walked only one batter.
Alyssa Gartley also pitched well in the Eagles’ other game, against Edward Little. The two have been alternating games, and Erskine coach Holly Tripp said that might continue.
“Right now, they’re pretty even,” Tripp said. “I think we might flip-flop. We’ll see what happens when we play different teams.”
