The only man facing charges from a home invasion that left a father and daughter severely injured has been moved to a jail in southern Maine.
Authorities said the move was to keep him away from a second person who may be charged in the same incident.
Leo Rose Hylton, 18, of Augusta, is charged with elevated aggravated assault in the May 27 break-in at the Pittston home of William Guerrette Jr. Hylton is being held at Cumberland County Jail and was involved in a fight at that facility on Friday.
Kennebec County Sheriff Randall Liberty said Monday that Hylton was moved to keep him separate from Daniel Fortune, 20, who had shared an Augusta apartment with Hylton.
Hylton identifies himself as Fortune's foster brother. For years they were raised by the same family.
Liberty said Fortune "is still considered one of the primary suspects" in the Guerrette home invasion case and that charges could be filed against Fortune as soon as this week. The two potentially are co-defendants, Liberty has said.
The Kennebec County Sheriff's Office and Maine State Police are cooperating in that investigation.
On Monday, Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion said in a news release Hylton is being kept in "administrative segregation" following a fight with an inmate serving a 60-day sentence for drug possession.
The incident occurred Friday morning in the recreation yard for maximum security inmates, and the two were separated without serious injuries, Dion said.
"Hylton was assigned to administrative segregation to ensure his personal safety pending a review of the event and the motives surrounding the assault," Dion said.
Administrative segregation means Hylton is not allowed to mix with the majority of the inmate population during recreation.
Fortune, meanwhile, remains held in Kennebec County jail on charges he stole more than $111,000 worth of cash and collectible currency from the Guerrette home in November 2007.
He is scheduled to be in Superior Court at 10 a.m. July 29 to answer to a charge of failure to appear last month for a jury trial. A new jury trial on the felony theft charge is set for Aug. 13.
Fortune also was involved in a jailhouse assault in Augusta, on May 30. He was treated at a hospital for face and head injuries after threatening an inmate's daughter; the inmate responded by punching Fortune.
Hylton is scheduled to be in Kennebec County Superior Court at 10 a.m. on June 24 on the aggravated assault charge.
He also faces a misdemeanor charge of theft dating from an incident May 5 at Shaw's supermarket in Augusta.
Hylton's attorney in that case has asked that it be transferred to Superior Court.
Affidavits and other court documents related to the May 27 early morning home invasion remain impounded.
The one public document -- the Superior Court complaint -- accuses Hylton of harming William Guerrette, 42, and Nicole Guerrette, 10, "with the use of a dangerous weapon -- a machete, sword or knife."
Three other members of the Guerrette family were home at the time of the break-in.
Both Guerrettes remain hospitalized. Nicole Guerrette was reported to be improving, and Liberty said he had heard she was attempting to sit up.
