AUGUSTA -- Two women who allegedly robbed a State Street convenience store after threatening the clerk, and who were later chased down with a customer's help, have been indicted on robbery charges.
Tristan R. Berry, 20, of Hallowell and Bobbie Jo Lavoie, 28, of Pittston each were indicted by a Kennebec County grand jury Thursday on one count of robbery.
An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but it indicates that sufficient evidence is present to proceed with formal charges and a trial in superior court.
Robert Muller, a clerk at the Big Apple Store on State Street, called police at 10:34 p.m. Jan. 21 and reported an armed robbery, Augusta police Detective Keith Brann said at the time.
Muller described the two suspects as thin females wearing black, hooded shirts and told police they presented a note saying that they had a gun and demanded money.
Muller handed over the money from the cash register. The two women ran toward Hallowell with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Brann said Matthew Day, 41, of Hallowell, who had left the store shortly before the robbery, was sitting in his truck when Muller came out saying the store had been robbed.
Day followed the women in his truck and called police on his cell phone to report their location.
Thursday's robbery indictment charges Berry and Lavoie with using the threat of force against Muller.
